Jätevesisäiliö

Jätevesisäiliö, often referred to as a septitankki or saostuskaivo in Finnish, is a type of wastewater treatment system primarily used in areas lacking a centralized sewage network. Its main purpose is to collect and partially treat domestic wastewater from properties such as houses, cabins, or commercial establishments.

The typical jätevesisäiliö is an underground container, usually made of concrete, plastic, or fiberglass. It functions by allowing solid waste to settle to the bottom as sludge, while lighter materials like grease and oil float to the surface as scum. The liquid wastewater, known as effluent, then passes through the tank. In simpler systems, this effluent is then discharged into a soil absorption field or a leaching bed, where further biological treatment occurs naturally. More advanced systems may incorporate additional stages for improved effluent quality.

Regular maintenance is crucial for the effective operation of a jätevesisäiliö. This includes periodic emptying of accumulated sludge and scum by a professional wastewater service. Failure to do so can lead to system overflow, environmental contamination, and potential health hazards. The design and installation of jätevesisäiliö systems are often subject to local regulations and environmental standards to ensure responsible wastewater management.
