The main stages of jatetöihin include collection, sorting, recycling, energy recovery, and final disposal. Collection systems vary by municipality and are often organized by service providers that transport waste from residential, commercial, and industrial sources to processing facilities. Sorting facilities separate waste streams—recyclables, organics, hazardous materials—using manual labor or automated technologies such as conveyor belts, magnets, and optical scanners. Recyclables are processed into new products or sold to manufacturers, while organics may be laundered or composted.

Energy recovery, often through incineration or anaerobic digestion, converts waste into electricity or biogas, reducing the volume destined for landfills. Remaining waste is typically sent to landfills, which are engineered to minimize leachate production and methane emissions by covering waste with impermeable layers and capturing landfill gas for energy use.

Regulatory frameworks, such as the European Union’s Waste Framework Directive and national policies, set standards for waste minimization, recycling targets, and emissions controls. In Finland, the Ministry of Environment oversees waste management, promoting circular economy principles and encouraging municipalities to adopt integrated waste solutions that prioritize reuse, recycling, and energy recovery over disposal.
