Järjestiktöötlus, commonly translated as sequential processing or serial processing, refers to the execution of instructions or tasks in a strict order, one after another. In computing, this is the fundamental mode of operation for a single processor. Each instruction is fetched, decoded, and executed in a defined sequence before the next instruction is processed. This contrasts with parallel processing, where multiple tasks or instructions can be executed simultaneously.

The concept of sequential processing is deeply ingrained in the architecture of most computer systems. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) operates on a fetch-decode-execute cycle, which is inherently sequential. Even in systems with multiple cores, individual cores typically perform sequential processing. The overall system might appear to be doing multiple things at once due to rapid switching between tasks or the utilization of different cores for different processes, but each individual core follows a serial path for its operations.

Sequential processing is straightforward to understand and implement. It simplifies programming as developers don't need to manage complex synchronization mechanisms required for concurrent execution. However, it can be a bottleneck for computationally intensive tasks, as the total execution time is directly proportional to the number of operations and their complexity. Optimizations in sequential processing often involve improving the efficiency of each step in the fetch-decode-execute cycle, such as pipelining, where different stages of instruction processing overlap.
