Järjestikkasid (Finnish for "ordinal IDs") refers to identifiers that reflect the position of an item in a sequence, providing a unique, ordered label for records as they are created or accepted into a collection. In practice, the term is used in Finnish software and data-management literature to describe identifiers that increase monotonically with insertion order, as opposed to random or non-order-preserving identifiers such as UUIDs. The concept is not universally standardized in English-language sources, where similar ideas are described as monotonic or sequential keys.

Implementation and usage: The most common realization is an auto-increment integer field in relational databases, often backed by a sequence object to guarantee monotonic growth. In distributed or partitioned systems, several per-partition sequences or centralized coordination are used, which can complicate global ordering but preserve scalability. Some designs embed the ordinal value in the ID itself, making the sequence observable without querying metadata.

Advantages and trade-offs: Järjestikkasid simplify ordering, pagination, and range queries and typically yield smaller, faster keys than UUIDs. However, they create gaps after deletions, may require strict write ordering that can become a contention point, and can reveal information about the size or growth rate of a dataset. In distributed environments, maintaining a single global ordinal ID can be impractical; designers often prefer per-partition sequences or alternate identifiers.

Variants and related concepts: IDs may be strictly numeric, alphanumeric, or composite (for example, a partition identifier plus a local ordinal).
