Järelmaksulepingud, known in English as installment agreements or hire purchase agreements, are financial contracts that allow a consumer to purchase goods or services and pay for them over a period of time through a series of fixed payments. This type of agreement is commonly used for purchasing larger items such as furniture, electronics, vehicles, or even for services like education or renovations.

In a typical järelmaksuleping, the seller (or a third-party financing company) provides the goods or services to the buyer immediately. The buyer, in turn, agrees to repay the total cost, which usually includes an interest rate and possibly administrative fees, in regular installments. These payments are often made monthly. The agreement clearly outlines the total price, the interest rate, the duration of the payment period, the amount of each installment, and any other associated charges. Ownership of the goods may remain with the seller or financing company until the final payment is made, at which point ownership transfers to the buyer.

The primary advantage for consumers is the ability to acquire desired items without needing to pay the full price upfront. This offers greater purchasing power and flexibility. For sellers, it can increase sales by making products more accessible to a wider range of customers. However, consumers should carefully review the terms and conditions, particularly the interest rates and any late payment penalties, to ensure they can comfortably meet the repayment obligations. Failure to make payments can result in penalties, damage to credit history, and potential repossession of the goods.
