Jämviktsförskjutning refers to the shift in the position of a chemical equilibrium in response to a change in conditions. Chemical equilibrium is a dynamic state where the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction, resulting in no net change in the concentrations of reactants and products.

The principle governing jämviktsförskjutning is Le Chatelier's principle. This principle states that if a change of condition is applied to a system in equilibrium, the system will shift in a direction that relieves the stress. The common conditions that can cause a jämviktsförskjutning include changes in concentration, temperature, and pressure.

If the concentration of a reactant is increased, the equilibrium will shift towards the product side to consume the added reactant. Conversely, increasing product concentration will shift the equilibrium towards the reactant side.

Changes in temperature affect the equilibrium position depending on whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic. For an exothermic reaction (releasing heat), increasing the temperature shifts the equilibrium to the left (reactants), while decreasing the temperature shifts it to the right (products). For an endothermic reaction (absorbing heat), the opposite occurs.

Changes in pressure primarily affect reactions involving gases. If the pressure is increased, the equilibrium will shift towards the side with fewer moles of gas to reduce the pressure. If the pressure is decreased, the equilibrium will shift towards the side with more moles of gas.
