Jumper kabel, commonly referred to as jumper cables or jump leads, are insulated electrical cables with alligator clamps used to establish a temporary electrical connection between two batteries or power sources. They are most often employed to start a vehicle with a discharged battery by transferring power from a charged battery to the dead one.

Construction and specifications: The cables consist of copper conductors enclosed in insulated jackets, color coded with red for positive and black for negative. Automotive sets typically use gauges from 4 AWG to 8 AWG, with lengths ranging from about 12 to 20 feet to reach between vehicles. The clamps are designed to grip battery terminals securely and provide a low-resistance path for current flow.

Usage: With both engines off, connect the red positive clamp to the positive terminal of the charged battery, then to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Next connect the black negative clamp to the negative terminal of the charged battery and the other black clamp to a grounded metal surface on the vehicle with the dead battery, away from the battery itself. Start the donor vehicle and run it for a minute or two, then attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery. Remove the clamps in reverse order after the dead vehicle starts, ensuring the clamps remain clear of moving parts.

Safety and limitations: Handle cables carefully to avoid sparks near batteries that emit hydrogen gas. Inspect cables for damage and ensure clamps have good contact; avoid contact with belts, pulleys, or fans. Some modern vehicles or electrical systems may require professional assistance, and jump-starting can cause damage if polarity is reversed or if underlying issues exist. Do not use jumper cables on a battery that is cracked or leaking.

Storage: After use, coil or fold the cables and store them in a dry, sheltered place, away from direct heat or moisture. Regularly check for wear and replace damaged components.
