jugulodigastric

Jugulodigastric refers to the jugulodigastric lymph node, a deep cervical lymph node located at the angle of the mandible where the posterior belly of the digastric muscle intersects with the internal jugular vein. It is a prominent component of the upper deep cervical (level II) lymphatic basin and lies deep to the sternocleidomastoid muscle near the jawline.

Drainage from the tonsillar region and portions of the oropharynx, including the palatine tonsils, soft palate, and adjacent pharyngeal structures, commonly passes to this node. Because of its role in draining the oropharynx, the jugulodigastric node is often referred to as the tonsillar node. Envelopment by surrounding fascia can vary, and its exact position may differ slightly among individuals.

Clinically, the jugulodigastric node is notable for its tendency to enlarge in infections of the tonsillar and oropharyngeal region, such as tonsillitis or pharyngitis. It can also become enlarged in other head and neck infections or in malignancies of the oropharynx, nasopharynx, or tonsillar area. Palpation of this node is a routine part of neck examination when oropharyngeal pathology is suspected; enlargement may warrant imaging or further evaluation to distinguish between benign infectious causes and more serious conditions.
