In that year, land was returned to its ancestral families, debts were forgiven, and Hebrew slaves were freed; the land was to lie fallow. Because the ancient Temple in Jerusalem no longer stands, the full religious observance of the Jubilee has not been practiced in modern times, though the idea continues to influence cultural and religious discussions about debt relief, land allotment, and social resets.

Modern usage: In secular contexts, jubile is used to celebrate or announce anniversaries at various milestones. Common categories include silver jubilees (25 years), golden jubilees (50 years), and diamond jubilees (60 years), though naming conventions can vary by country and organization. Monarchies, cities, universities, churches, and corporations often stage jubilees to commemorate history, honor achievements, and set future goals. Notable examples include the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, the Golden Jubilee in 2002, and the Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
