Jordbrukspolitik is the set of government policies that shape agriculture and farming systems. It covers measures that affect production, prices, and market access, while also pursuing broader goals such as food security, rural development, farmer income stability, and environmental stewardship. Policy decisions are made at national, regional, and international levels and interact with trade rules, budgets, and public opinion.

Policy instruments include price supports or market interventions, direct payments, subsidies for inputs or environmental compliance, production quotas, crop insurance, and other risk-management tools. Regulation may set standards for animal welfare, pesticide use, land use, drainage, and environmental protection. Governments may also use public procurement, strategic reserves, or targeted grants to influence supply and prices and to support specific farming activities.

Design and institutions: Agricultural policy is typically part of broader economic and social policy. Over time many systems have shifted from price-based supports to decoupled payments and payments linked to environmental performance. The European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is a prominent example in member countries; elsewhere policies are shaped by national legislation and, in some regions, by international frameworks and agreements such as trade or regional arrangements.
