Jonotus (genitive jonotuksen) is the act or process of forming and waiting in a queue, or the system by which people or tasks are organized for service or processing. In everyday Finnish, jonotus describes standing in line at a bank, shop, or ticket office, as well as the management of such lines in digital contexts where requests await processing by a server or processor.

The term is formed from jono (queue) with the suffix -tus to denote a process or state; the genitive form is jonotuksen. In formal or technical contexts, the study of how queues form and behave is called jonotusteoria (queueing theory).

Applications of jonotus span service industries, administration, and information technology. Effective jonotus seeks to balance service speed, fairness, and crowding, often using strategies such as single versus multiple queues, or priority queues where different requests have different processing orders.

Key concepts in jonotusteoria include arrival processes, service processes, and queue disciplines (the rule that determines order of service). Common models describe a system with one or more servers and various distributions of arrival and service times. The most familiar discipline is FCFS — first-come, first-served — known in Finnish as ensimmäisenä saapunut, ensimmäisenä palveltu. Metrics used to assess performance include odotusaika (waiting time), jonon pituus (queue length), and palvelutaso (service level).
