The jarbua, scientifically known as Jaculus jaculus, is a small rodent belonging to the family Dipodidae. It is also commonly referred to as the lesser Egyptian jerboa or Egyptian jerboa. This species is native to North Africa and parts of the Middle East, inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions such as deserts and steppes.

Jarbua are characterized by their elongated hind legs, which are significantly larger than their forelimbs, and a long, tufted tail. These adaptations are crucial for their locomotion, allowing them to hop and jump with remarkable agility over long distances. They typically move in a saltatorial manner, using their hind legs to propel themselves and their tail for balance and steering. Their forelimbs are much shorter and are used for digging, grooming, and manipulating food.

These nocturnal rodents are primarily herbivorous, feeding on seeds, roots, and other vegetation found in their dry habitats. They are well-adapted to conserve water, obtaining most of their moisture from their diet and through metabolic water production. Jarbua are solitary animals and are known for their burrowing behavior, creating extensive underground tunnel systems that provide shelter from predators and the harsh desert climate. Their burrows often have multiple entrances and chambers.
