The term is analogous to the more widely known term plaque forming units (PFU) but refers specifically to the number of cells capable of supporting virus growth rather than the infectious viral particles themselves.

The standard procedure for determining jalostusyksiköt involves inoculating a series of dilutions of a virus or bacterial suspension onto a monolayer of susceptible host cells. After an incubation period, the cells are fixed and stained to identify cytopathic effects or other markers of infection. The highest dilution at which a characteristic response is observed is used to calculate the unit value, typically expressed as units per milliliter (U/mL). This method provides a quantitative estimate of the viro-permissive cell population present in a sample.

Jalostusyksiköt are critical in vaccine production, where accurate cell counts are necessary to determine optimal seed virus concentrations and to control batch-to-batch consistency. They are also applied in research settings, for example in assessing cell line fitness, evaluating antiviral efficacy, and standardizing experimental conditions across laboratories.

The unit remains an informal but useful metric in Finnish scientific literature. While not universally adopted worldwide, its principles mirror those of other culture-based quantification systems, ensuring comparability of results. Researchers often report jalostusyksiköt alongside more conventional cell counts, such as cells per milliliter or the viable cell density measured by trypan blue exclusion, to provide a comprehensive view of the cellular environment in infectious disease studies.
