Its primary function is to automatically disconnect non-essential loads from the power supply when there is a deficit in electricity generation compared to demand. This ensures the stability and integrity of the remaining power system, preventing widespread blackouts.

The need for jakosäätöjärjestelmän arises from the dynamic nature of electricity supply and demand. Generation capacity can fluctuate due to various reasons, such as equipment failures, maintenance, or changes in renewable energy output. Simultaneously, demand can surge unexpectedly. If the demand exceeds the available generation, the frequency of the power system drops.
