Jätten is the Swedish term for "the giant" and is used to refer to large mythic beings in Scandinavian folklore and literature. Etymologically, it derives from Old Norse jǫtunn, plural jötnar, meaning a member of a race of giants who inhabit the world apart from gods and humans. In Swedish usage, jätten can denote a towering human or a legendary giant in fairy tales, often depicted as a formidable obstacle or magical helper.

In Norse mythology, the jötnar constitute a distinct group from the gods (æsir) and the beings of the earth and sea. They inhabit Jötunheimr and interact with the gods in myths. Ymir, the primordial frost giant, is a central figure; from his body the world is created. Many notable jötnar include Skrymir, Thrym, and Loki the trickster, who is described as a jötunn by birth. The conflicts between the jötnar and the æsir are recurring, culminating in Ragnarök, where many giants fight the gods.

In folklore, giants are common figures in tales across Sweden and Scandinavia. They are often portrayed as powerful but not invincible and appear as antagonists who abduct humans, guard treasure, or demand tribute, though they can also be helpful or wise in some stories. The jätten remains a cultural symbol of natural forces and the unknown; in modern media the figure persists as a trope in fantasy, children’s literature, and games.
