Jälkiehkäisytabletit, commonly known as the morning-after pill, are a form of emergency contraception used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. They are not intended for regular use as a primary birth control method.

There are two main types of emergency contraceptive pills available. One contains levonorgestrel, a progestin hormone, and is effective for up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex, though it is most effective the sooner it is taken. The other type contains ulipristal acetate, which can be effective for up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex. Both types work by preventing or delaying ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. They may also prevent fertilization by affecting sperm or the egg's ability to be fertilized. If fertilization has already occurred and implantation has begun, these pills are not effective.

They are generally safe and effective, but like all medications, can have side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and changes in menstrual cycle.
