Isomerism is a phenomenon in chemistry where molecules have the same molecular formula but different structural arrangements of atoms. This difference in arrangement leads to distinct physical and chemical properties, even though the number and type of atoms are identical. The term "izomeredésének" is the Hungarian word for "its isomerism."

There are several types of isomerism. Structural isomerism, also known as constitutional isomerism, describes molecules that have the same molecular formula but differ in the connectivity of their atoms. For example, butane and isobutane are structural isomers; both have the formula C4H10, but the carbon atoms are connected differently.

Stereoisomerism, on the other hand, refers to molecules that have the same molecular formula and the same connectivity of atoms, but differ in the spatial arrangement of their atoms. This category further divides into enantiomers and diastereomers. Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, much like left and right hands. Diastereomers are stereoisomers that are not mirror images.

Geometric isomerism, a type of stereoisomerism, occurs in molecules with restricted rotation around a bond, typically a double bond or in a ring structure. The different spatial arrangements of substituents around this restricted bond lead to distinct geometric isomers, often denoted as cis and trans. Understanding isomerism is fundamental to comprehending the diversity of chemical compounds and predicting their behavior.
