The term "ivoires" is the French word for ivory. Historically, ivory has been a highly prized material derived primarily from the tusks of elephants, but also from other animals like walruses, hippopotamuses, and narwhals. Its smooth texture, lustrous sheen, and pale color have made it desirable for a wide range of decorative and utilitarian objects.

For centuries, ivory was carved into intricate sculptures, religious artifacts, combs, chess pieces, and decorative inlays for furniture. The trade in ivory was a significant economic driver in many regions, but it also led to widespread elephant poaching and contributed to the endangerment of several species.

Due to the severe impact on wildlife populations, international efforts have been made to curb the ivory trade. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has implemented strict regulations and bans on the commercial ivory trade. Consequently, the use of and trade in ivory is now heavily restricted in most parts of the world, with significant legal penalties for violations. Modern alternatives made from synthetic materials or plant-based sources are often used to replicate the appearance of ivory.
