Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, often transliterated Ciurlionis, was a Lithuanian painter and composer who lived from 1875 to 1911. He is regarded as a pivotal figure in Lithuanian modern art and a pioneer of Symbolism in the Baltic region. Čiurlionis is celebrated for integrating painting and music, seeking to express inner experience through a synthesis of visual and sonic elements.

His painting is characterized by dreamlike symbolism, vibrant color, and evolving geometric forms. He developed the concept of tone paintings, or tone pictures, in which color, form, and composition are arranged to evoke musical mood and rhythm. Many of his works pair landscapes with mythological or spiritual motifs, highlighting a preference for harmony, order, and abstraction over literal representation.

In addition to painting, Čiurlionis composed music, including orchestral and piano works, as well as choral and chamber pieces. His artistic methodology aimed to translate musical ideas into visual language and vice versa, reflecting a holistic approach to the arts that influenced later generations of Lithuanian artists.

Legacy and influence are most visible in the Czech-Lithuanian and broader Baltic art histories. The M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas houses the largest collection of his works and maintains his legacy within Lithuania’s cultural heritage. Čiurlionis is regarded as a national symbol of Lithuanian identity and as an early forerunner of abstract art in the region.
