Itavana is a type of traditional Fijian barkcloth, also known as masi. It is made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree (Fotsia papyrifera). The process of creating itavana is labor-intensive and involves several steps. First, the inner bark is stripped from the branches of the tree and then soaked in water. After soaking, the bark is pounded and flattened with wooden mallets until it forms thin sheets. These sheets are then joined together to create larger pieces.
