Isotopie is a concept in linguistics that refers to the way meaning is distributed across sentences. It's concerned with how new information is presented in contrast to or in relation to existing information. This distribution of information is crucial for how listeners or readers process and understand a message.

There are generally two main components of isotopie: the topic and the comment. The topic, also known as the given information or presupposed information, refers to what the speaker or writer assumes the listener or reader already knows or is familiar with. The comment, also known as the new information or focus, is what the speaker or writer wants to convey as novel or important.

The relationship between topic and comment is not static. A piece of information that is new in one utterance can become old information, or part of the topic, in a subsequent utterance. This continuous flow and re-distribution of information helps to create coherent and understandable discourse. For example, if someone asks "Where is John?", the answer "John is at the park" presents "John" as the topic (given information, assuming the question implies John is known) and "at the park" as the comment (new information). In the next sentence, "He is enjoying the sunshine," "He" refers back to "John" and becomes part of the topic, while "is enjoying the sunshine" is the new information.

Understanding isotopie helps in analyzing sentence structure, identifying emphasis, and explaining how connections are made between different parts of a text or conversation, ultimately contributing to effective communication.
