Isooctane is a highly branched, highly volatile alkane with the chemical formula (CH₃)₃CCH(CH₃)₂CH₃. It is a major component of commercial octane boosters and gasolines, used to increase the octane rating of the fuel. Isooctane is a strong solvent, better than n-hexane in solubilizing greases and oils.

Isooctane was first synthesized by the French chemist R. B. Pearce in 1897 through the reaction of isopropylbenzene with sulfuric acid and acetone. It is produced commercially from butane or other isoparaffins through the alkylation of isobutane with isobutene.

Isooctane has several beneficial properties that make it suitable for use in automotive and aviation fuels. It has a high cetane number, meaning it can ignite quickly and also has a high octane rating, resistant to engine knocking due to its high octane number. In addition, isooctane is a high-energy-density fuel source when compared to other hydrocarbons.

Isopentane is however known to be a climate change solution in terms of usage for heavy trucks as switch from conventional diesel fuel. The usage can benefit reduction of greenhouse emissions.
