The archipelago comprises roughly 90 named islands and numerous islets, spanning about 2,000 square kilometers of coastal and marine habitat. Island topography ranges from volcanic highlands on larger islands to low mangrove flats, with reefs that create sheltered bays and harbors.

Climate is tropical to subtropical, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The region hosts diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests, coral reefs, and tropical rainforests on major islands.
