Vastera

Vastera was a United States–based provider of global trade management (GTM) software and related consulting services, assisting multinational companies in complying with import and export regulations and in optimizing cross-border logistics. The company offered a software platform alongside advisory services to automate tasks such as classification, valuation, origin determination, free-trade agreement management, and regulatory screening, as well as duties optimization and updates on country-specific regulations. Vastera served industries including consumer electronics, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, with a global client base and offices in North America, Latin America, and Europe.

Founded in the 1990s, Vastera grew through a combination of software development and consulting to address evolving needs in global trade compliance, including customs brokerage support and risk management. In 2007, DHL Global Forwarding announced the acquisition of Vastera, integrating its technology and services into DHL’s Global Trade Services offerings. The Vastera brand was subsequently folded into DHL's trade management operations, with its capabilities incorporated into DHL’s GTM and supply-chain security programs.

Impact: The acquisition broadened DHL’s ability to provide end-to-end cross-border trade services by combining DHL’s logistics network with Vastera’s compliance technology, helping clients manage regulatory changes, duty costs, and supply-chain risk. The Vastera platform and expertise contributed to DHL’s offerings in global trade compliance and trade management, though the Vastera brand itself is no longer active as a distinct entity.
