Irreverence is a stance or style characterized by a lack of reverence or ordinary respect toward persons, institutions, or sacred things. It can be intentional and pointed or casual and playful. The word derives from the prefix in- meaning 'not' and reverent, from Latin reverentia, meaning respect, combined to express withholding of respect toward established norms.

Irreverence manifests in various forms, including satire, parody, mockery, and bawdy humor. It can function as social critique, exposing hypocrisy, challenging authority, or refreshing tradition by testing its boundaries. It is not synonymous with blasphemy; irreverence may or may not target the sacred. Blasphemy refers more specifically to sacred offense.

Historically, irreverence has played a role in religious reform, literary and artistic movements, and modern media. Writers and performers have used irreverent tones to question power, conventions, and dogma. In contemporary culture, stand-up comedy, editorial cartoons, and online memes frequently employ irreverence to critique politics, culture, or public figures, sometimes provoking controversy as a result.

Reception of irreverence varies by culture and context. Some traditions valorize it as a necessary check on authority or a spark for change, while others condemn it as disrespectful or blasphemous. As a rhetorical device, irreverence can promote critical reflection but may also alienate or offend audiences depending on framing and intent.
