The Earth's crust is naturally very low in iridium. Much of the iridium found on Earth is believed to have originated from extraterrestrial sources, primarily meteorites. The most well-known example is the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary layer, which contains an abnormally high concentration of iridium. This layer is widely interpreted as evidence of a massive asteroid impact that occurred approximately 66 million years ago, leading to the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.

Beyond geological impact sites, iridiumbearing minerals are also found in some magmatic ore deposits, often in association with other platinum-group metals like platinum and palladium. The identification and analysis of iridiumbearing materials are crucial for understanding Earth's history, extraterrestrial influences, and the formation of certain mineral deposits. Due to its rarity and difficulty in extraction, iridiumbearing ores are not typically mined for iridium alone but may be processed as a byproduct of mining for other valuable metals.
