ionomerization

Ionomerization is a process that involves the conversion of a polymer into an ionomer. Ionomers are polymers that contain a small but significant percentage of ionic groups along their polymer chains. These ionic groups are typically formed by the addition of ionic species to a pre-existing polymer or through the incorporation of ionic monomers during polymerization. The presence of these ionic groups significantly alters the material properties compared to the parent polymer.

The process of ionomerization can occur through various methods. One common approach is the post-polymerization modification, where a polymer containing reactive sites, such as carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid groups, is reacted with a metal salt or a strong base. This reaction introduces the ionic character. Alternatively, ionomers can be synthesized directly by copolymerizing ionic monomers with non-ionic monomers. The choice of method depends on the desired ionomer structure and properties. The concentration and type of ionic groups, as well as their distribution along the polymer chain, are critical factors influencing the final material characteristics. These characteristics can include increased strength, improved toughness, enhanced adhesion, and altered thermal and mechanical properties.
