Ionivaihteluiden, often translated as ion exchange, is a chemical process where ions in a solution are exchanged for other ions that are bound to a solid material. This material, known as an ion exchanger, typically consists of an insoluble porous matrix, such as a resin, that has a significant number of ionizable functional groups. These functional groups can attract and bind ions from the surrounding solution.

The mechanism involves the diffusion of ions from the bulk solution to the surface of the ion exchanger. Once at the surface, an electrostatic attraction causes the ions in the solution to displace ions that are loosely held by the functional groups on the exchanger. This exchange is reversible; the ions bound to the exchanger can be released by treating it with a concentrated solution of ions that have a higher affinity for the exchanger's functional groups.

Ion exchange is widely used in various applications. In water treatment, it is employed to soften water by removing calcium and magnesium ions, which cause hardness. It is also used to demineralize water by removing all dissolved ionic impurities. In analytical chemistry, ion exchange chromatography is a powerful technique for separating and analyzing charged species based on their different affinities for the ion exchange resin. Other applications include the purification of pharmaceuticals, the recovery of valuable metals from industrial waste, and in catalytic processes. The effectiveness of ion exchange depends on factors such as the type of ion exchanger, the concentration and charge of the ions in the solution, and the pH and temperature of the process.
