Ionisointimenetelmistä refers to methods of ionization, a process where an atom or molecule gains or loses electrons, resulting in a charged particle known as an ion. This phenomenon is fundamental in various scientific fields and technological applications.

One common ionization method is electron ionization (EI). In EI, a beam of high-energy electrons is passed through a sample. These electrons collide with the sample molecules, knocking out one or more electrons and forming positive ions. This technique is widely used in mass spectrometry for identifying and quantifying compounds.

Another significant method is chemical ionization (CI). Unlike EI, CI uses reagent gas molecules that are ionized first, typically by electron impact. These reagent ions then react with the sample molecules through proton transfer or other ion-molecule reactions, leading to the ionization of the sample. CI is often considered a "softer" ionization technique than EI, producing less fragmentation and providing more information about the molecular weight of the analyte.

Photoionization (PI) utilizes photons, or light particles, to ionize molecules. When photons with sufficient energy strike a molecule, they can transfer energy to its electrons, causing them to be ejected. The energy of the photons can be precisely controlled, allowing for selective ionization of molecules with specific ionization potentials.

Electrospray ionization (ESI) is a widely used technique in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). In ESI, a liquid sample is sprayed through a charged needle, creating a fine mist of charged droplets. As the solvent evaporates, the charge density on the droplets increases until ions are expelled into the gas phase. ESI is particularly useful for analyzing large biomolecules such as proteins and peptides.

Other methods include atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) ionization, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), each with its specific advantages and applications depending on the nature of the sample and the analytical goals.
