Operation and components: Ionbalancers rely on sensors such as ion-selective electrodes for specific ions, conductivity meters, and pH sensors to assess the solution’s ionic state. A control unit compares real-time measurements with target ion concentrations and charge balance, then actuates corrective measures. Actuators may include dosing pumps to add salts or acids/bases, ion-exchange media to remove selected ions, and electrochemical cells that selectively insert or remove ions. Some implementations also employ membrane-based filtration to retain or remove particular ions.

Methods and configurations: A typical ionbalancer can operate in a closed-loop mode, continuously adjusting ion inputs and removals to maintain the target profile. In electrochemical configurations, controlled electrode reactions can help balance specific ions, while in chemical dosing setups, calibrated injections of salts or chelating agents are used. The choice of sensors, ion-selective membranes, and control algorithms depends on the target ions and the required response time.

Applications and considerations: Applications include automated management of laboratory buffers, electroplating baths, chemical production streams, and certain industrial water treatments. Advantages include improved reproducibility, reduced manual titration, and tighter control over solution chemistry.
