Crosssensitivity, sometimes written cross-sensitivity, is a phenomenon in which sensitization or an immune response to one agent extends to related agents that share structural features or immunologic determinants. The term is used across disciplines such as immunology, allergy, pharmacology, and toxicology to describe how exposure to one substance can affect sensitivity to others.

In immunology and allergy, cross-sensitivity involves cross-reactivity, where antibodies or T cells recognize similar epitopes on different antigens. This can lead to allergic reactions to related foods, pollens, or latex after initial sensitization. Examples include pollen–food syndromes (such as birch pollen and apples) and latex–fruit syndrome (where latex sensitivity coincides with reactions to certain fruits). Cross-sensitivity also explains why some individuals react to related drugs or chemical families.

In pharmacology, cross-sensitivity describes adverse or immune responses to drugs that belong to the same pharmacologic class or share chemical structures. Penicillin and certain cephalosporins are frequently discussed in this context, where clinicians consider the possibility of cross-reactive hypersensitivity when selecting alternatives. In toxicology, exposure to one toxin can alter sensitivity to related toxins, influencing risk assessments and regulatory decisions.

Diagnosis typically relies on clinical history, targeted skin testing or specific IgE measurements, and, when appropriate, supervised drug challenges or desensitization protocols. Management involves avoiding known cross-reactive substances when feasible, or implementing cautious, monitored exposure with appropriate substitutes or desensitization strategies. It is important to recognize that cross-sensitivity is not universal; related substances may be tolerated by some individuals, and thorough evaluation is essential for safe management.
