Iodoform, also known as triiodomethane, is a chemical compound with the formula CHI3. It is a pale yellow, crystalline solid with a distinctive, strong, penetrating odor, often described as medicinal or antiseptic. Iodoform is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves readily in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.

Historically, iodoform was widely used as an antiseptic and disinfectant due to the slow release of iodine. It was applied topically to wounds and in dentistry. However, its use has largely been replaced by more effective and less odorous modern antiseptics. The characteristic smell of iodoform is sometimes used as a diagnostic test for the presence of certain bacteria in clinical settings.

Iodoform can be synthesized through the haloform reaction, typically by reacting ethanol or acetone with iodine in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. This reaction involves the iodination of the methyl group of the carbonyl compound. While it was once a common laboratory reagent, its use has declined. It can also be found in some older pharmaceutical preparations, though its presence is now uncommon.
