Intravital refers to processes or measurements conducted within a living organism. The term is used in biology and medical research to distinguish experiments performed in vivo from those in vitro (in a dish) or ex vivo (outside the organism but on living tissue). It emphasizes observation of dynamic biological events as they occur in real time inside a living subject.

The scope of intravital work includes imaging and functional assessment of tissues and organs in their natural environment. Intravital imaging techniques often rely on specialized microscopy methods, such as intravital microscopy and intravital fluorescence, frequently using multiphoton or confocal platforms to visualize cells, vasculature, and molecular interactions. The approach can involve labeled cells, fluorescent probes, or endogenous contrasts to track processes like blood flow, immune cell trafficking, and tumor–host interactions.

Common implementations use window preparations and chamber models that provide optical access to regions such as the cremaster muscle, brain (cranial window), skinfolds, liver, or lymph nodes. These setups enable repeated measurements over time and the study of dynamic phenomena including cell migration, angiogenesis, and organ physiology. Intravital approaches are valuable for understanding disease mechanisms, pharmacodynamics, and treatment responses in a context that preserves tissue architecture and systemic influences.

Challenges in intravital research include surgical complexity, anesthesia effects, motion artifacts, and phototoxicity. Ethical considerations and animal welfare are important, and technical limitations such as depth penetration and resolution influence data interpretation.
