Intermodulaatiosärö, or intermodulation distortion (IMD), is a type of signal distortion that occurs when two or more different frequencies are present in a nonlinear system. When these frequencies interact within the nonlinear system, they produce new frequencies that were not originally present in the input signal. These new frequencies are called intermodulation products.

The intermodulation products are typically found at sums and differences of the original frequencies and their harmonics. For example, if the input signals are at frequencies f1 and f2, the intermodulation products might appear at frequencies like f1 + f2, f1 - f2, 2f1 - f2, 2f2 - f1, and so on. The presence of these unwanted frequencies can degrade the quality of an audio signal, interfere with radio communications, and cause errors in data transmission.

IMD is often characterized by its order, which depends on the number of original frequencies involved and the powers of those frequencies in the nonlinear equation describing the system. Second-order products are generated from the sum and difference of two frequencies, while third-order products are more common and can be particularly problematic as they can fall close to the original signal frequencies.

Minimizing intermodulation distortion is crucial in many electronic applications. This is achieved by designing systems with high linearity, meaning they process signals without introducing significant nonlinearities. Careful component selection, proper circuit design, and filtering are common methods to reduce IMD. In audio systems, for instance, high-quality amplifiers and loudspeakers exhibit low IMD, resulting in a cleaner and more accurate sound reproduction. In radio transmitters and receivers, reducing IMD is essential to prevent interference between different communication channels.
