Interferences refer to phenomena that occur when two or more waves overlap in space. The resulting wave is described by the principle of superposition, where the amplitudes add to form a new wave. Interference can produce regions of greater amplitude (constructive interference) or regions of reduced or canceled amplitude (destructive interference).

In wave physics, interference requires some degree of coherence between the waves. Coherence means a fixed phase relationship over time; without it, the pattern tends to average out. The relative phase difference determines the type of interference. When the phase difference is a multiple of 2π, constructive interference occurs; when it is π, destructive interference. Interference also affects signals in technology. Signal interference can be unwanted noise in communications, requiring filtering, shielding, or error-correcting techniques. In other domains, interference can refer to cognitive interference, such as proactive or retroactive interference in memory, or sensory masking in perception.
