It captures the dual objective of ensuring data remains accurate, complete, and untampered, while giving individuals control over their personal information and transparency about how it is used.

Technical approaches include: for integrity, cryptographic hashes, digital signatures, tamper-evident logs, and versioning; for privacy, encryption (at rest and in transit), access controls, data minimization, anonymization and pseudonymization, differential privacy, and privacy-preserving analytics such as secure multiparty computation.

Applications span cloud storage, healthcare and financial records, Internet of Things deployments, and social platforms, where data sharing with partners or analytics must be balanced against consent and confidentiality. Key risks include data breaches, insider threats, data inaccuracies, and overcollection.

Governance emphasizes privacy-by-design, data governance frameworks, and risk assessment, with accountability for data handling. Compliance considerations include GDPR, HIPAA, and sectoral rules, complemented by standards such as ISO/IEC 27001 and its privacy extension ISO/IEC 27701.

Challenges and trade-offs include balancing data utility with privacy, performance and cost overhead, interoperability across systems, and regulatory fragmentation across jurisdictions. Ongoing research focuses on scalable privacy-preserving technologies and reliable, auditable integrity verification.
