Instrumentalism is a philosophy of science and epistemology that treats scientific theories as instruments for predicting and controlling phenomena rather than as literal descriptions of an objective reality. In this view, the value of a theory lies in its predictive success, coherence with observation, and practical usefulness, not in whether its unobservable entities are believed to exist.

There are related but distinct strands. Epistemic or linguistic instrumentalism emphasizes the meaning of theoretical terms as tools for organizing experience, while anti-realist positions such as constructive empiricism argue that science aims for empirical adequacy—sufficient agreement with observable phenomena—rather than a commitment to the truth about unobservables. Instrumentalism is often contrasted with scientific realism, which holds that theories aim to approximate true descriptions of the world, including its unobservable aspects.

Historically, instrumentalist tendencies appeared in the work of Ernst Mach and Henri Poincaré, who stressed the instrumental role of theories in guiding experience. It influenced later pragmatists like William James and John Dewey, and remains a significant strand within the broader philosophy of science. In contemporary discussions, instrumentalism is sometimes invoked to interpret the aims of science, to defend the utility of models regardless of their ontological commitments, or to underwrite a form of empirical or pragmatic justification for scientific practice.

Critics argue that instrumentalism can undermine the explanatory ambition of science and leave unresolved questions about the nature of scientific truth and the status of unobservable entities. Defenders reply that predictive success and methodological utility provide a robust basis for scientific inquiry without ontological commitments.
