Instanssi, in Finnish, denotes a level or stage of a process, especially in law, but also in information technology. In legal language, instanssi refers to the level at which a case is heard and decided within a jurisdiction. The concept distinguishes the proceeding's initial decision maker from higher levels of review. In Finnish civil and criminal procedure, the first instanssi is typically a local or district court (käräjäoikeus), where the case is heard and adjudicated. If a party appeals, the matter advances to the second instanssi, usually an appellate court (hovioikeus or higher instances). Further appeals may lie to the Supreme Court of Finland on specific grounds. Administrative litigation uses dedicated administrative instanssit, such as hallinto-oikeus as the first instanssi and the Supreme Administrative Court as the highest.

In information technology, instanssi can refer to a running copy of a software application or service, often in the context of cloud computing. Each instanssi operates independently with its own memory and state, allowing scaling and isolation. The term is common in Finnish IT vocabulary and is analogous to 'instance' in English.
