Inpainting, also known as image completion or image restoration, is a process used in digital image processing to fill in missing or corrupted parts of an image. The goal is to reconstruct the damaged areas in a way that is visually plausible and consistent with the surrounding content. This can involve removing unwanted objects, repairing scratches and blemishes, or restoring damaged portions of old photographs.

The techniques used for inpainting vary. Early methods often relied on simple diffusion-based approaches, where information from the surrounding pixels was spread into the missing region. More advanced techniques leverage algorithms that analyze the structure and texture of the known parts of the image to intelligently predict and fill in the unknown areas. Machine learning, particularly deep learning models like convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have become highly effective in inpainting tasks, capable of generating remarkably realistic and contextually appropriate completions.

Inpainting has numerous applications. It is widely used in photo editing software to seamlessly remove distractions or restore damaged photos. In film and video production, it can be employed for special effects, such as removing wires or temporary objects from a scene, or for digital restoration of old film footage. The underlying principle is to intelligently synthesize new pixel data that blends harmoniously with the existing image.
