Infrapunakoagulatsioon is a medical procedure that uses infrared radiation to coagulate (thicken and clot) biological tissues. This technique is employed for various therapeutic purposes, primarily in ophthalmology and dermatology. In ophthalmology, it is used to treat conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and central serous chorioretinopathy. The infrared light, typically from a diode laser, is absorbed by the pigmented layers of the retina, causing a localized thermal effect. This thermal effect can seal leaking blood vessels, destroy abnormal new blood vessels (neovascularization), or reduce fluid accumulation. The procedure aims to preserve or improve vision by preventing further damage to the macula.
