infinitivsmerket

The infinitivsmerket, also known as KrågTorvet or Litleiabreen, is a glacier situated on the island of Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic. The term "infinitivsmerket" is a Norwegian word meaning "infinitive market" or "junction of infinitives", but it is unclear how the glacier acquired this name.

Geologically, the infinitivsmerket is an extension of the Austfonna ice mass, which covers the southern part of the Nordaustlandet islet. The glacier flows westward, emptying into the Storfjorden coastal area. Characteristically, the glacier has a length of approximately 140 kilometers.

The climate of the Svalbard archipelago, in which the infinitivsmerket is located, is dominated by the fierce polar climate with very long, cold winters. The weather conditions on the glacier are accordingly harsh and unfavorable for sub-tropical plantings.

The scientific community has conducted several studies on the infinitivsmerket glacier. In 2005, Norwegian scientists part of the Research Council of Norway began a four-year field campaign to evaluate part of the climate changes. Similar expeditions have occurred in the years that followed to explore the glacier and document changes related to environmental concerns.

Because of its vast size, scientific efforts often rely on remote sensing and satellite programs to further study the glacier. Studies have indicated the importance of structural dynamics in the interpretation of terrain and glacier configurations.
