Inertialmõõturid, also known as inertial measurement units (IMUs), are devices that measure and report an object's acceleration, angular velocity, and sometimes magnetic field orientation. They typically consist of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes magnetometers. Accelerometers measure linear acceleration along three axes, while gyroscopes measure rotational velocity around three axes. Magnetometers measure the strength and direction of the magnetic field. By combining the data from these sensors, an IMU can determine an object's orientation, position, and velocity.

The core components of an IMU are based on fundamental physical principles. Accelerometers can be implemented using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, where tiny masses are suspended and their displacement due to acceleration is detected. Gyroscopes often utilize vibrating structures or optical principles to sense rotation. The data from these sensors is processed by an internal algorithm, often a Kalman filter, to provide a more stable and accurate estimation of the object's state.

IMUs have a wide range of applications across various fields. In consumer electronics, they are found in smartphones and tablets for screen orientation, gaming, and motion-based controls. In aviation and aerospace, they are crucial for navigation and stabilization systems in aircraft, drones, and spacecraft. The automotive industry uses IMUs for electronic stability control, navigation, and advanced driver-assistance systems. They are also employed in robotics for motion control, in sports for performance analysis, and in virtual reality for tracking user movements.
