Its name is derived from the Javanese words *ieni* (meaning "to defend") and *rajah* (meaning "king" or "leader"), reflecting its historical association with royal protection and warrior traditions.

Ienieraj is characterized by its fluid, efficient movements and a focus on practical self-defense techniques. Unlike some martial arts that emphasize sport or competition, Ienieraj was developed as a system for real-world combat, incorporating strikes, grappling, and weapon-based training. Traditional practitioners often trained with weapons such as the *kris* (a curved dagger) and *sarong* (a short sword), though empty-hand techniques were also emphasized.
