Induration refers to the hardening of a tissue or organ in the body. This hardening is typically caused by an increase in connective tissue or by the accumulation of inflammatory cells. The term originates from the Latin word "indurare," meaning "to harden." Induration can occur in various parts of the body and can be a sign of several underlying conditions.

One common cause of induration is inflammation. When tissue becomes inflamed, the body often responds by sending immune cells and increasing blood flow to the area. This can lead to a buildup of fluid and cells, resulting in a palpable firmness. Chronic inflammation can lead to more significant fibrosis, or scar tissue formation, which further contributes to induration. For example, induration can be seen in chronic skin conditions like eczema or in the hardening of breast tissue due to mastitis.

Another cause of induration is the development of tumors, both benign and malignant. Tumors are masses of abnormal cells, and their growth can displace or infiltrate surrounding tissues, leading to hardening. The density of a tumor can vary, but many present as firm or hard nodules. Palpable induration in organs like the breast, prostate, or liver may warrant further investigation to rule out malignancy.

Certain degenerative processes can also lead to induration. For instance, in conditions like osteoarthritis, the cartilage in joints can break down, and the underlying bone may thicken and harden, causing induration in the affected joint. Similarly, scarring from old injuries or surgical procedures can result in localized induration. The presence of induration is often detected during a physical examination and may necessitate diagnostic imaging or a biopsy to determine its cause.
