Incandescent halogen is a type of electric light bulb that is a modification of the incandescent light bulb. It operates on the same principle, using a tungsten filament that is heated to incandescence by an electric current. However, halogen bulbs contain a small amount of a halogen gas, such as iodine or bromine, within the bulb.

The presence of the halogen gas creates a regenerative cycle called the halogen cycle. When the tungsten filament heats up, some tungsten atoms evaporate and combine with the halogen gas to form a tungsten halide compound. As the gas circulates within the bulb, it comes into contact with the hot filament. The high temperature of the filament causes the tungsten halide to break down, redepositing the tungsten back onto the filament and releasing the halogen gas. This process helps to prevent the filament from thinning and breaking as quickly, leading to a longer lifespan for the bulb compared to standard incandescent bulbs.

Another benefit of the halogen cycle is that it allows the filament to be operated at a higher temperature. This results in a whiter, brighter light and a higher luminous efficacy (more light output per unit of energy consumed) than traditional incandescent bulbs, although it is still less efficient than modern LED or fluorescent lighting. Halogen bulbs are often used in applications where good color rendering and a bright, focused beam of light are important, such as spotlights, automotive headlights, and some residential lighting fixtures. They are known for their instant on and dimmable capabilities.
