Imunopatologia is the study of diseases that result from the immune system malfunctioning. This can involve the immune system overreacting, underreacting, or misidentifying self-cells as foreign. When the immune system is too active, it can lead to autoimmune diseases where the body attacks its own tissues, such as in rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. It can also cause allergies, where the immune system reacts excessively to harmless substances like pollen or certain foods.

Conversely, an underactive immune system, known as immunodeficiency, leaves the body vulnerable to infections. This can be primary, meaning it's a congenital condition, or secondary, often caused by factors like HIV infection, malnutrition, or certain medications. In some cases, the immune system fails to recognize and eliminate cancerous cells, contributing to cancer development. Imunopatologia also investigates transplant rejection, where the recipient's immune system attacks the foreign organ.
