In dance and movement arts, improvisation probes space, timing, and contact and can serve as a method for generating material or for performers to explore embodiment without fixed choreography.

Improvisation is taught in music schools, conservatories, drama programs, and community groups to develop listening, adaptability, and ensemble skills. It raises questions about authorship and structure and remains a valuable tool for rehearsal, composition, and performance across disciplines.
