Impressionism was an art movement that emerged in France during the late 19th century. It originated as a rebellion against the rigid traditions of the French art establishment, particularly the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Impressionist artists sought to capture the fleeting moment, the transient effects of light and color, and the sensory experience of a scene rather than a detailed, academic representation.

Key characteristics of Impressionism include visible brushstrokes, open composition, an emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities, often accentuating the effects of the passage of time, ordinary subject matter, and the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience. Artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro were central figures. They often painted outdoors, or "en plein air," to directly observe and record the ephemeral qualities of nature and urban life. Their subject matter frequently included landscapes, everyday scenes, portraits, and still lifes, rendered with a new sense of spontaneity and immediacy. The movement's name itself was derived from a painting by Monet, "Impression, soleil levant" (Impression, Sunrise), which was exhibited in 1874 and sarcastically titled by a critic. Despite initial criticism, Impressionism profoundly influenced subsequent art movements and remains one of the most beloved and recognized styles in art history.
