The most famous bearer is Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919), a French painter who helped lead the development of Impressionism. Born in Limoges and raised in Paris, Renoir studied at the studio of Charles Gleyre with future Impressionists such as Claude Monet and Frédéric Bazille. He became renowned for his vibrant color, soft light, and generous, convivial scenes of everyday life. Major works include Le Déjeuner des Canotiers (Luncheon of the Boating Party, 1881) and Bal au moulin de la Galette (Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette, 1876). Renoir’s brushwork and approach to the human figure contributed to the movement’s emphasis on capturing moments of contemporary life. He continued painting despite failing health in later life and died in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1919.
