Impregnointi, or impregnation, is a processing method in which a porous solid is saturated with another substance, often a liquid or gas, so that the pores are filled or the surface properties are altered. The impregnant may remain in the material, react and cure, or undergo polymerization to produce a permanently modified product.

The process relies on diffusion and capillary action to move the impregnant into the material. In many cases, vacuum is applied to remove trapped air and improve penetration, followed by the application of pressure to drive the impregnant further into the pores. The choice of impregnant depends on the substrate, the desired properties, and compatibility with subsequent manufacturing steps. Impregnation can be performed under ambient conditions or as part of a controlled industrial process.

Common applications lie in several sectors. Wood treatment uses preservatives and resins to increase durability, resistance to decay, moisture, and insects. Concrete, ceramics, and porous composites can be impregnated to reduce porosity, improve chemical resistance, or enhance strength. In electronics and fiber-reinforced materials, impregnation helps eliminate voids and improve insulation or dimensional stability. In biomedical contexts, impregnation concepts are used to embed materials with resins or gels to tailor mechanical and chemical properties, and in histology for embedding tissues in embedding media.

Environmental and safety considerations include the toxicity of some impregnants, proper handling, and waste management. Advances in impregnation focus on safer, more durable, and more sustainable materials and processes.
